Again: Piracy (ie. ROMs) is preservation. Piracy is archives. Piracy is art-affirming in a world which devalues and abandons art.https://t.co/4H2SbzpSaM — Srsly Wrong Podcast (@SrslyWrong) July 14, 2023ALT

I’m just gonna slide this on in here for anyone that is interested in preserving old games. They take it very seriously too, they want an archive of every single game. Like, they have lists of every game ever released for a system, and once that system gets old enough, they add it to their archive and start collecting. Their latest addition was the Xbox 360, they opened that vault up in September 2022, and proudly announced they’d finished their collection of games for it back in April.

Also, while their game archives are almost entirely complete, they’ve got another project of archiving the manuals that came with those games, and that is… considerably less well filled out. Their collection of Xbox 360 manuals is especially rough, they’ve only gotten manuals for three games. So if you’ve got some Xbox 360 games kicking around, and the manual’s still with them, please consider scanning them and submitting them to the site!

Game preservation is important, but people rarely consider preserving the manuals as well; I really respect Vimm’s Lair for being so thorough in their archival work.

CGI animators should unionize next. normally, their jobs would be too precarious to strike, since studios would replace them without a second thought, but if it’s part of this larger general film strike, they might finally have meaningful power to better their working conditions

if CGI animators unionized, it would kill the MCU. straight up. the the entire business model is built on exploiting CGI animators

i had trouble picking up on certain expressions as a child so i didn’t understand what ‘let them eat cake’ was supposed to mean or why it was a bad thing i was like. aw that’s nice she’s giving the french peasants cake. why are people mad about this

image

BASICALLY it’s meant to represent that the person saying it (often attributed to marie antoinette, although she didn’t actually say it) is extremely out of touch and doesn’t understand poverty. like, in context it’s a rich person being told that poor people have no bread to eat and going “?? why don’t they just eat cake then???”, as if the problem was solely a lack of bread specifically and not, like, starvation. i guess a more modern analogue would be if a rich person was told that someone wasn’t able to find an apartment and they were like “ohh they should just get a house instead!!!”

okay perfect, now explain “have their cake and eat it too”

bc of fucking course im going to eat the cake i have. thats PART of it “i bet you want to have that shirt and wear it too” THATS THE WHOLE POIIINT!!!

what’s usually meant by this one would honestly be better phrased as “eat your cake and have it too”— what they’re saying is that eating your cake is fundamentally incompatible with having it; once you’ve eaten your cake, you don’t have it anymore. hence, “you can’t have it both ways”
